The Wisdom of the Three Yang
In the sixth cycle, we enter a period of Deepening Wisdom. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the years between 36 and 42 are marked by the settling of the “Three Yang” channels. This isn’t a “decline” in the modern sense, but rather a redirection of energy. The body begins to shift its focus from the external world to the internal sanctuary, prioritizing the health of the organs and the clarity of the spirit.
During this phase, the energy that once flowed so abundantly to the surface of the skin and the extremities begins to pull inward to nourish the “Core.” It is a time of refinement, where a woman often discovers that “less is more”, less frantic movement leads to more profound power.
The Physical Landscape: The Interior Shift
As the Yang energy (the active, warming energy) begins to consolidate, the physical body communicates in more subtle ways:
-
The Brightening of the Eyes:
While the ancient texts suggest the hair may begin to show streaks of "wisdom" (grey) and the facial channels may soften further, there is often a new "brightness" in the eyes. This is the light of the Shen (Spirit) shining through a more mature vessel. -
The Metabolism of Energy:
The body becomes more discerning about how it spends its Qi. A woman may find she requires more intentional recovery time. Her physical strength is no longer based on raw stamina, but on the efficient, balanced use of her breath and blood. -
Hormonal Nuance:
For many, this cycle involves a subtle shift in the "Sea of Blood." The menstrual cycle may change in length or flow as the body prepares for its next great transformation. This is a time to nourish the Liver and Kidneys to ensure the blood remains rich and the flow remains smooth.
The Emotional & Psychological Atmosphere: The Soul’s Harvest
Psychologically, this cycle is often defined by The Great Unveiling.
-
The Integration of Shadows:
In her late 30s and early 40s, a woman often gains the emotional capacity to look at her life with total honesty. There is a psychological "tidying up” - letting go of old traumas or stories that no longer fit the woman she has become. -
Self-Actualization:
The Shen (Spirit) is now very well-anchored. This creates a sense of "unshakeability." While the external world may be chaotic, the internal world becomes a place of refuge and authority.
Nature, Cosmology, and the Internal Climate
This is the cycle of The Gathering. Just as nature prepares for the quiet of winter, the body begins to value conservation:
-
The Internal Climate:
The "Triple Burner" (the system that regulates fluid and heat) needs careful attention now. This is a stage where "Internal Wind" can arise, manifesting as stress, tension headaches, or erratic emotions. Finding ways to "still the wind" through breathwork and quietude is vital. -
Cosmology & The Afternoon Sun:
This cycle mirrors the "Late Afternoon" of the day. The light is golden, long, and beautiful, but the heat is less intense. It is a time for deep reflection and for enjoying the "fruits" of the labor performed in the earlier cycles. -
The Element of Water:
As the Yang energy settles, the importance of the Water element (the Kidneys) becomes paramount. This is the time to "recharge the batteries." Salt baths, mineral-rich foods, and protecting the lower back (the "Gate of Life") help keep the deep essence warm and protected.
** Note: In TCM, “whitening” refers to a loss of the “fiery” luster of youth, replaced by a more translucent, refined complexion.
Nature-Based Self Care Tips
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we believe that when our internal climate (our health) mimics the harmony of the external world (nature), we find true balance.
Here are a few “Nature-based Self-Care” rituals tailored to the progression of a woman’s life.
Cycles 0 - 21:
The Season of Rising
(Spring/Morning)
- The "Barefoot Rooting" Ritual:
Since these years are about building foundation and Wood energy, encourage walking barefoot on grass. This connects the "Bubbling Spring" point (Kidney) on the bottom of the foot directly to the Earth’s Yin energy.
- Morning Sun Exposure:
Watching the sunrise helps set the "circadian fire" of the Spleen, aiding digestion and mental clarity during the intense years of schooling and growth.
Cycles 22 - 42:
The Season of Abundance
(Summer/Mid-Day)
- The "Internal Shade" Practice:
During these high-output years, women are prone to "Heat." Suggest a ritual of sitting near moving water, such as a stream, fountain, or the ocean. The negative ions and the cooling "Water" element help soothe "Liver Fire" and high stress. - Harvest Eating:
Align meals with the "Micro-Seasons." Eating what is currently growing in your local soil ensures your "Middle Burner" (the digestive system) is perfectly tuned to the environment you live in.
Cycles 43 - 70:
The Season of Gathering
(Autumn/Evening)
- The "Golden Hour" Walk:
As the body begins to conserve Jing (essence), gentle walks during the golden hour (just before sunset) help the Shen (spirit) transition into a state of peaceful reflection. - The Pine Needle or Salt Soak:
In the later cycles, the Kidney energy (Water element) needs protection. A warm foot soak with sea salt or pine needles before bed helps pull "floating Yang" (restless energy) down from the head and back into the roots of the body for deeper sleep. - Space Clearing:
Just as trees drop their leaves in Autumn, women in these cycles benefit from clearing their physical space. Removing clutter from the home mirrors the internal process of "letting go" of old emotional burdens.
